This study examined the effect of tariffs on Nigeria's foreign trade. The data for this study were from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin between the period 1981 and 2018. The study used both descriptive statistics and the framework of Engel-Granger cointegration/error correction modeling for data analysis. The study used tariff, exchange rate, trade openness as explanatory variablesand non-oil export was used as the dependent variable which servedas proxy for trade. From the analysis carried out, the study found the existence of a long run relationship between the variables. Tariff and trade openness were both positive and significant impact on trade in Nigeria. On the other hand, exchange rate has a negative but insignificant impact on trade in Nigeria. Based on the findings, study recommended that higher tariff be imposed on imported goods in order to foster growth of selected industries that can produce such goods and that the economy be allowed some degree of openness to enable Nigeria export some of her goods to the rest of the world.
